A Slice of Cake and a Twist of Fate
Sometimes the best things in life start with dessert. That’s exactly how our story begins...
Back in 2021, Rachel made a big leap, leaving her digital marketing career in the fast-paced world of New York sports and heading south to plant roots in Austin, Texas.
While settling in and pivoting to the world of real estate marketing, Rachel’s realtor Jill (shoutout to Jill!) offered a casual introduction to a friend and marketing powerhouse; a seasoned CMO with deep experience in real estate investing. “You’ve got to meet my friend Jessica. She’s a total pro in marketing and an overall fantastic person—you two would hit it off!”
Spoiler alert: we did.
We met one night for dessert and talked about everything from our careers and marketing philosophies to motherhood and the quirks and perks of Austin-living. It was the kind of easy, meaningful conversation that made it clear this wouldn’t be the last time we connected.
Fast forward a year, and we ironically found ourselves working at the same company in Austin. Our friendship deepened, and so did our professional admiration for each other. But life had even more in store.
By spring 2023, we were in very different places. Rachel had stepped away from corporate life to focus on her new baby and personal healing. Jessica had just started a new venture but found herself craving more purpose and connection. We hadn’t talked in months, but one weekday in August, we spontaneously met for lunch at Spread & Co.—a lunch that would change everything.
We swapped stories, frustrations, and dreams. We shared how burnt out we felt by the corporate world, how we longed for something more meaningful, something that prioritized people, community, and truly excellent work. By the end of that lunch, a spark had been lit.
Could we actually build that something ourselves?
After a lot of prayer, soul-searching, and some well-timed moments of divine alignment, Fat Baby Marketing was born in the fall of 2023.
Since then, it’s been a whirlwind of learning, growing, and building a business that reflects everything we care about: empathy, quality, creativity, community, and fun. We’ve worked with over 18 incredible clients, partnered with local charities and organizations, and most importantly, remained true to who we are: two friends and marketers on a mission to do things differently.
And to think... it all started with one inspired realtor and a slice of cake. Thanks, Jill!
Here’s to dreaming big, starting small, and building something beautiful along the way.
